Sailor Jerry, otherwise known as Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, was an iconic figure in the world of tattooing. Born in 1911 and based out of Honolulu, Collins revolutionized the art and craft of traditional American tattooing throughout his career. His signature style combined with traditional Americana imagery has since been adopted in various forms by generations of tattooers around the world.

Tragically, Sailor Jerry passed away on June 12th 1973 at the age of 62. The cause of death was a heart attack followed shortly after by septic shock related complications. The incident happened while he was in high altitude during one of his usual flights between Hawaii and California where he often visited other tattooers to spread the art and learn new techniques himself. His influence on tattoos will remain – providing longstanding cultural value – long beyond his passing.

In addition to influencing tattoos worldwide, Sailor Jerry left an incredible legacy behind as a businessman, creating a thriving business model that would be replicated for years after his death too.
